If angels and astronauts share the same sky
I can’t get enough of religious iconography. When I discovered the works of the artist Aleksandra Mir I’ve been struck. She’s been able to match religion and science, Past, static and symbolic, with Future, unknown and amorphous. Unfortunatly I missed to visit her exhibition in Rome, one year ago, but her site displays a lot of her works. Here’s the series “Il sogno e la promessa” (the dream and the promise) in which she juxtaposes pictures of space exploration to sacred images.

Recuperated from second hand markets and religious article shops in Sicily, these cult effigies are “ready-mades” that the artist transforms with her manual work. Antique prints, first communion prayer cards and saint cards are combined (through formal similarities) to cut-outs of NASA images, Shuttle missiles and cosmonauts. The saint’s halos are similar in shape to astronaut’s helmets, rocket’s smoke trails con be overlapped to celestial clouds, the gold decoration radiating around Jesus’s head is identical to the contour of a spaceship porthole.
Aleksandra Mir, of Swedish nationality, grew artistically in New York, where she lived from 1990 to 2005, and recently in Palermo, where she has been living for the past five years. Living in Sicily she personally experienced the peculiar popular expressions of Christian faith. She was attracted to a particular place that is Pantaleone, a sacred art shop located in the middle of Palermo which became her source of inspiration.
The artist makes the expressions of two clashing cultures converge. On the one hand there is the idea of space, intended as another field of conquest for Man and on the other the popular expressions of Christian faith, in other words, scientific and technological development versus religious tradition. Maybe they are both attempts to give an answer, in two profoundly different ways, to the eternal question posed by Man: “what am I doing here?”.

La delicatezza delle composizioni e la perfezione dei collage rimarcano la perfetta unione di due ambiti opposti: scienza e religione. Quello che Aleksandra Mir riesce a fare con i suoi ready made risponde in qualche modo alle storiche divergenze tra chi crede e chi non, unendo in maniera quasi intuitiva il passato e il futuro, natura e sovrannaturale.
“Se gli angeli e gli astronauti condividono lo stesso cielo” si chiede ” non è tempo che si incontrino?”.
Uno strano esperimento che però appare tanto più naturale quanto più si osservano queste immagini in cui santini e stampe antiche sono combinate insieme a ritagli di immagini della NASA, superfici lunari, missili e astronauti sfruttando alcune somiglianze formali. L’aureola dei santi è simile al casco degli astronauti, il fumo dei missili sembra la nube celeste della santità, l’aura dorata intorno Gesù Cristo sembra il contorno degli oblò delle astronavi.
La Mir, svedese di origine e vissuta molti anni a New York, si è recentemente trasferita a Palermo dove ha vissuto negli ultimi cinque anni. E’ rimasta colpita dalle forme di religiosità popolare tipicamente italiane (e che in Sicilia si fanno ancora più barocche) ed è stata particolarmente attratta da un negozio di articoli religiosi e arte sacra, Pantaleone, che è diventato una sorta di base per le sue opere.
Lo Spirito indefinibile e il Pensiero illimitato. La contraddizione che si percepisce in queste immagini unisce l’intimità umana, che si esprime con immagini antropomorfe e fuori dal tempo e l’universalità intesa come pensiero dello spazio infinito. Passato e Futuro, immaginario conosciuto e immaginario immaginato, il passato simbolico e il futuro senza forma. La Religione era scienza come oggi la Scienza è religione. In fondo non cercano, religione e scienza, di dare entrambe una riposta all’eterna domanda: che cosa ci facciamo qui?
